Today I’m going to show you how to make a DIY cucumber trellis that will save you space in your garden. This is the first year that we are taking gardening head on and really trying to grow a good amount of vegetables to eat and preserve. That means making the most out of the space we have and training out plants to grow vertically.
You can make a trellis out of so many different things. I just happen to score this galvanized roll of fence for less than a dollar at a yard sale. If you don’t already have a roll of this laying around I would source different material. The amount I used from this roll wasn’t much and the cost of a new roll is very pricey.
I thought it would be great material because of how sturdy it is and we can use it year after year. It collapses flat so storing it for the winter will be easy and not take up space.
Other Ideas For A DIY Cucumber Trellis
- Two garden stakes with twine zig zagged back and forth wrapped around them.
- Wooden pallet leaning & secured.
- 3 long sturdy sticks tied together like a teepee.

How To Make A DIY Cucumber Trellis
Step 1
Measure the width that you will need your trellis to be & unroll the galvanized metal to cut two identical pieces using your wire clippers. You will want to wear your gloves to make sure you don’t poke yourself with the metal.
Step 2
Cut the top horizontal piece of wire off the top of one of the pieces. You will be left with the vertical wires long enough to wrap around the other side of the trellis. Place the two pieces of galvanized metal together like a tent & wrap the long pieces of metal around the other to secure them together.
Step 3
Position the DIY cucumber trellis on the outside of the cucumber plants and push down into the soil. I used a garden shovel to loosen up the dirt which made it easier for the trellis to go in.
